Rock Point Overhead Crane Delivery Day

DCI was on site last week for the much-anticipated overhead crane delivery at Rock Point Granite and Marble (RPG) in Raleigh, NC! This installation features a 122-foot span beam with a 10-ton lifting capacity, enabling efficient handling of granite and marble slabs sourced internationally and distributed to vendors across the state. Nine (9) years after managing construction of the main facility, it was DCI’s pleasure to once again support RPG with this expansion, adding the overhead crane, increasing storage and upgrading the base facility to further establish Rock Point Granite and Marble as a key player in the luxury countertop market for years to come. Project highlights are as follows:

Focused on Value

  • Construction team was able to design the pre-engineered metal building (PEMB) to account for sloped existing grades in the expansion area. This value creation impacted the project as follows:
    • By utilizing the existing exterior slab, over 12,000 SF of concrete was saved both reducing construction waste and saving on overall project cost.
    • PEMB columns were adjusted to existing grades (column baseplates at different elevations) reducing the need for stem walls or concrete columns. For a typical PEMB, this would have been less challenging; however, adding in the crane structural moments made this a more difficult task for the PEMB and structural design team. In the end, the engineers worked to a solution focused on meeting the client’s best interest.

Key Project Highlights

  • Added 13,578 SF expansion to Rock Point Granite and Marble’s existing facility expanding storage and increasing efficiency in operations.
  • Ten (10) ton crane spans nearly all usable area within the expansion to maximize both storage and efficiency.
  • Navigated the permitting process and strict architectural requirements to produce a cost-efficient PEMB.
  • Revisited the main facility lighting design increasing light levels to accommodate better viewing of granite and marble materials within the sales floor.

As the project nears final completion, it has been DCI’s pleasure to partner with a repeat client nine (9) years after the main facility was completed, especially considering this was one of founder Jim Tully’s first projects as DCI.
